NEW YORK - Major League Soccer announced the appointment of Nelson Rodriguez as President of Chivas USA. Rodriguez will oversee all aspects of business and baseball operations while Chivas USA MLS continues its search for a new group of owners.
Last week, Chivas USA MLS bought Jorge Vergara and Angelica Fuentes, taking responsibility for the running of the club until the arrival of a new ownership group is finalized. Head coach Wilmer Cabrera, who joined the club on Jan. 9, will continue to serve and be under the command of Rodriguez.
“I have had the privilege of working with Nelson for over 14 years and am very happy that he has agreed to be chairman of Chivas USA. Based on its extensive experience in business and in sports, I hope greatly that provide strong leadership for the club during this year of transition, “said Don Garber, MLS Commissioner.
Rodriguez joins Chivas USA, after 14 years in the offices of the MLS where he most recently served as Executive Vice President of Competition, Technical and Operations. Recognized by carrying out a series of initiatives both on and off the field, Rodriguez also has extensive experience in business operations, including his stint as vice president of strategic development for the trading partner of the MLS, Soccer United Marketing. Before joining the MLS, the New Jersey-born executive club was NY / NJ MetroStars and member of the local organizing committee for the Giants Stadium during the World Cup 1994.
“I am grateful for the opportunity and recognize the responsibility that comes at an important time for the club,” Rodriguez said. “Regardless of the search for the club owner, and his staff this team will compete on all fronts and we look forward to the challenge ahead.”
In the coming months, the League resells the club to a new ownership group that is committed to building a new arena and keeps the team in Los Angeles. The League has had initial discussions with a number of interested owners who are very qualified and attempt finalize an agreement with a new group this year.
The club played under the name of Chivas USA during the 2014 MLS season and will be re-launched with a new name and shield set the new ownership group.
Chivas USA started the regular MLS season on March 9, 2014 when they host the Chicago Fire in a televised game nationally by UNIMAS.
